Original stars Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell are all returning to play their famous characters again.
They will appear throughout the season as the show connects the past with the present.
A New Story for a New Generation
The new show focuses on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of the original series’ main couple, Dwayne and Whitley.
The story follows Deborah during her first year at Hillman, the same school her parents attended.
As a freshman, she struggles to find her own identity while living in the shadow of her famous parents.
She will be joined by a brand-new group of friends and classmates as they navigate college life together.
The Team Behind the Show
This new version will be a “single-camera” comedy with ten episodes in its first season.
Felicia Pride is the showrunner, and Debbie Allen—who was a huge part of the original series—is returning to direct the first episode and two others.
Filming begins this February in Atlanta and is expected to finish by late April.
Honoring the Legacy
The creators want this to feel like a true continuation of the original story rather than a brand-new reboot.
They aim to respect the history of the characters while talking about issues that students face today.
While there is no official release date yet, the production schedule suggests that the show could arrive on Netflix later this year.
