Ethan Hawke recalls moments spent with Graham Greene in ‘The Lowdown’
A memorable character
Ethan Hawke said at the Toronto International Film Festival that he had completed shooting for ‘The Lowdown’ with Graham Greene just a few months ago.
Greene, who is best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Kicking Bird in ‘Dances with Wolves‘, will be seen playing a very special character in this FX series.
Hawke says, “I have always been a fan of his acting. His playful style brought life to every scene.”
It is heartbreaking to hear that Greene is no longer among us.

What is the story?
‘The Lowdown’ is the story of citizen journalist Lee Raybon, who becomes a truthstorian and solves the mysteries of a small town.
Hawke shows a great mix of investigative journalism and personal drama in this role.
Graham Greene’s character brings cultural depth and unexpected twists to the story.
Series creator Sterlin Harjo gave prominence to indigenous narratives, where Greene’s acting brought life to each episode.
Offscreen bond
Greene’s energy on set was contagious. Hawke says that even during long shoots, Greene never forgot to joke and was a master of improvisation.
“I learned spontaneity from him,” Hawke says.
Watching them share fries and make light conversation during lunch breaks was proof of a real friendship.
The two maintained a childlike openness on and off camera.

Hawke was devastated to hear the news of Greene’s death.
He wrote on Instagram, “Working with him was shockingly fun.
He improvised brilliantly and infused every moment with spontaneity & humor.
I even got to break bread with him—and share some fries. Blessed travels, my brother.”
This tribute reflects their deep friendship and respect.
Greene’s legacy
Graham Greene also made a huge impact in Maverick, Die Hard With a Vengeance, The Green Mile, the Twilight series, Northern Exposure, Defiance, Longmire, Goliath and Reservation Dogs.
His agent said, “He was a great man of morals, ethics, character and will be eternally missed.”
His activism and efforts to promote representation in the Canadian First Nations community remain inspiring today.
