House of Guinness: A Story Set in Ireland, Shot in England

Netflix’s new period drama House of Guinness was released in September 2025 and immediately garnered attention.

The story is set in 19th-century Dublin, but interestingly, it was actually shot in England and Wales.

Why Wasn’t It Shot in Ireland?

Showrunner Steven Knight clearly stated that today’s Dublin doesn’t resemble the Dublin of 1868.

Just as Peaky Blinders wasn’t shot in Birmingham, England, was chosen to give this series an authentic feel.

Liverpool and Manchester Become Dublin-New York

Liverpool’s Georgian-era streets and Manchester’s Northern Quarter were used as the streets of Dublin and New York in the show.

Dale Street and China Lane in Manchester were used as the Bowery (NY).

Stockport and St. Mary’s Church created the atmosphere of old Dublin.

St George’s Hall and Sefton Park

Liverpool’s St George’s Hall featured in scenes of riots and demonstrations.

This location has also been used in films such as The Batman and Fantastic Beasts.

Sefton Park Palm House was chosen for the secret meeting scene in the Botanical Gardens.

Penrhyn Castle became a substitute for Ashford Castle

The Guinness family no longer owns the famous Ashford Castle, so Penrhyn Castle in Wales was used in its place in the series.

Its grandeur added a more authentic touch to the story.

Brewery built at Stanley Dock

Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease for the St. James’s Gate Brewery in 1759.

However, the series was shot at Liverpool’s Stanley Dock, where an old warehouse was converted into a brewery.

Croxteth Hall and Broughton Hall

The family’s stately Iveagh House was recreated at Croxteth Hall in Liverpool.

St. Anne’s House, which burned down in 1968, was revived at Broughton Hall in Yorkshire.

Result

House of Guinness demonstrated that location isn’t just a place, but also a key character in a story.

Historic buildings from England and Wales brought Dublin’s old world back to life on screen.
