Julia Garner’s journey to a Madonna biopic, despite obstacles, is hopeful for a new Netflix series.

The story of the “Material Girl” is yet to come
Finally, some good news! Julia Garner recently revealed on the SmartLess podcast that the Madonna biopic is still “going to happen”.
The project has been on hold for a few years, but it seems there is hope yet!
Madonna fan since childhood
Julia revealed that she has been a huge Madonna fan since childhood.
When I found out that a biopic was being made, I thought I had to audition,” she said. For her, it wasn’t just a role, but a dream!
The challenge of learning dance
The funny thing is that Julia is not a trained dancer!
She had to learn dancing for the audition, and then perform in front of Madonna herself.
Imagine – dancing to her own songs in front of the pop queen!
Thinking like Madonna
Julia said, “I asked myself – what would Madonna do?” Her answer was to exude confidence and take over the room.
“I put myself completely into that moment. My attitude was – ‘You can take me or leave me, but if you let me go, it will be your loss.'”
The project is related to 2022
After the success of “Inventing Anna”, Julia was selected for this role in 2022.
But in January 2023, news came that Universal Pictures was no longer developing this film. Still, Madonna and Julia remained in touch.

Seen together on many occasions
In December 2023, Julia appeared on stage with Madonna at her Brooklyn concert.
The rapport between the two artists is clearly visible!
“Who’s That Girl” working title
In July 2024, Madonna spoke about working on the script and revealed the working title “Who’s That Girl,” which is also the name of her 1987 film and song.
Netflix series is possible now
According to reports from May 2025, Madonna is now working on a limited series for Netflix with “Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy.
Julia has previously worked with Netflix on “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna”, so this combination could be perfect!
Julia’s busy days
Julia is currently playing the role of Silver Surfer in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, and her next film, “Weapons,” will be released on August 8.
One thing can be understood from this whole story – good things have to be waited for!
How Madonna’s story will play out remains to be seen, but we can all look forward to Julia Garner’s performance!
