When legend became reality
Apple TV+’s new series “Chief of War” depicts one of the most exciting periods in Hawaii’s history.
Co-created by Jason Momoa, the series follows Kamehameha the Great’s struggle to unify the islands in the late 18th century.
Kaʻiana: An extraordinary warrior
Who was Kaʻiana? This chief of Kauaʻi was the first leader to travel outside of Hawaii!
In 1787, he traveled with British trader John Meares to China, the Philippines and Alaska.
When he returned in 1788, he had amazing stories to tell his people.
Meares described him as a giant of a man, about 6’5″, with a “Herculean” body.
Gradually, Kaʻiana became famous throughout the Pacific.
A story of friendship and betrayal
Initially, Kaʻiana fought alongside Kamehameha to unify Hawaii, Maui, Oʻahu and Kauai. But political tensions began to rise.
After being excluded from a war council, he is said to have switched sides and supported his cousin Kalanikūpule.
Kaʻiana died in 1795 at the Battle of Nuʻuanu on Oʻahu, at the age of about 40.
It was one of the last battles before unification.
Honoring cultural heritage
The most striking feature of the series? Most of the dialogue is in ʻŌlelo Hawai’i!
Co-creator Thomas Paʻa Sibbett said using the native language was “essential” to understanding people’s perspectives.
Honolulu Momoa, a native of Hawaii and a descendant of Kaʻiana, serves as co-creator, co-writer and executive producer on the project.
He is also directing the final episode of the series. He describes the project as both “scary and thrilling.”
Combining history and imagination
“Chief of War” is not just a historical drama.
It is the story of the spirit of the Hawaiian people, their struggles and dreams.
Jason Momoa has shown the courage to bring this story to the big screen while paying respect to his ancestors.
