When asked what makes a good romantic hero (like the romance between his characters Luke and Lorelai), Scott explained that romance should always be “unexpected”—a relationship you wouldn’t expect from a distance.
He says the best romantic heroes are those who have to cross a “chasm” to reach another person, because things may not be going well, but they know they feel something special.
There needs to be an element of courage, where you’re willing to risk everything.
Luke and Lorelai’s relationship provided that, and perhaps that’s why fans still love it so much.

On the show’s 25th anniversary, Scott says the show’s popularity is due to its “unique characters” and “perfect casting.”
He believes that “nothing bad can happen” on the show, and even if there is some emotional damage, it always gets resolved.
It’s a true story of “two strong women creating a third strong woman,” and perhaps that’s why people still watch it again and again.
