Millie Bobby Brown initially found Eleven’s new look in Stranger Things Season 5 quite strange.

The Secret of Strange Clothes
In the final season of Stranger Things, Eleven’s new look has been a topic of much discussion among fans. Especially the style in which she wears short red shorts over grey sweatpants.
The show’s costume designer, Amy Paris, revealed that when Millie Bobby Brown first saw the idea, her reaction was the same as fans’ today—confusion!
Millie thought the combo was a bit odd, but Paris explained that “shorts over sweats” was a very common trend in the 80s.
80s Memories and Inspiration
This outfit wasn’t created out of thin air. Amy Paris explained that she drew inspiration for the look from classic ’80s movies like The Goonies and the show Punky Brewster.
Josh Brolin wore something similar in The Goonies. Story-wise, Eleven isn’t thinking about fashion because her friend Max is still in a coma.
Eleven simply picked up the clothes she found, but the designer tried to give them a cool mish-mash look.
Millie’s funny reply
When Millie was first emailed a sketch of this costume, she immediately side-emailed the creators and asked, “Are you guys sure?” During the fitting, she even jokingly said, “Thank God I’m married now!”
She hinted that she would hardly be able to impress anyone in such clothes. Millie, who married Jake Bongiovi in 2024, was initially a little skeptical about this look.
Finally, Comfort Wins
Despite her hesitation, Millie gradually grew to like the outfit. Paris says that when Millie saw that it looked cute on her and—most importantly—that it was very comfortable to wear, she agreed.
It was a fashion risk at the time, but Millie pulled it off perfectly. Now, by watching the new episodes on Netflix, you can decide for yourself whether this look is a hit or a miss!
