Morris Chestnut’s Memories of Malcolm and Jamal Warner

Whenever a star fades, some memories remain forever.

Morris Chestnut holds such memories, and even today, remembering his “The Resident” co-stars, Malcolm and Jamal Warner, still gets emotional.

First Day, First Dinner

In a recent interview, Morris recalled the moment he first arrived on the set of “The Resident” in 2019.

He said that Malcolm not only greeted him with a hello, but also invited him to dinner. “He was a very nice person,” Morris says.

“When I was a newcomer, he said, ‘Let’s go eat somewhere.’ And we went out to dinner.”

The “Cozby Show” Connection

Morris and Malcolm’s relationship wasn’t limited to just one show. Morris recalled watching “The Cozby Show” and relating to Malcolm’s character, “Theo Huxtable.”

He said, “I hadn’t considered acting at the time, but seeing Malcolm, I thought, ‘Wow! That’s so cool.’ I still love the episode about the Gordon Gartrell shirt.”

Later, on the set of “The Resident,” the two discussed this episode.

On-Screen Enemies, Off-Screen Friends

Interestingly, their characters were enemies on the show. Morris was a neurosurgeon and Malcolm was an orthopedic surgeon.

But in real life, their relationship was completely different. “He cared for everyone on the show, he was protective of everyone,” Morris said.

A Sad Farewell

Malcolm-Jamal Warner died in a drowning accident in Costa Rica in July 2023. Morris still struggles to come to terms with this tragedy.

He says, “I still can’t believe Malcolm is no longer with us. He was an incredible human being. I hate what happened to him. Om Shanti.”

Malcolm’s memory will live on forever in the hearts of Morris and his fans.

This is the story of an off-screen friendship that ended prematurely, but left behind a love that will endure forever.
