The Name of a Strange World

‘Pluribus’… just hearing the name suggests there are secrets hidden behind it.

And indeed there are! It’s a Latin word meaning ‘many’ or ‘several people’.

America has an old motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” meaning ‘out of many, one’.

But the show’s title is simply ‘Pluribus’… why? We delve into this mystery.

Plot Twist: The Enemy Is “Happiness”!

Imagine a world where every person is completely happy. No anger, no arguments, just smiles everywhere.

Sounds good, right? But for the show’s heroine, Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), this is a major threat. She’s a romance writer who sets out to save the world from this very ‘happiness’!

Is it really happiness, or the trap of an alien virus? This question will keep you hooked throughout the entire season.

Many Hearts, One Mind – How?

Now let’s reveal the secret of the title. ‘Pluribus’ here is the code name for what has taken over the world.

The alien signal that arrived has turned all of humanity into a ‘hive mind’ where everyone’s minds are connected.

That is, ‘many people together as one mind’! Everyone thinks alike, feels alike.

Carol, who has escaped this trap, believes that the true beauty of life lies in its imperfections.

She wants to give humanity back its flaws, its anger, its sorrow.

Vince Gilligan’s Struggle to Find a Title

For the genius creator of the series, Vince Gilligan (of Breaking Bad fame), the hardest part was coming up with a title!

He said that names like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ came easily, but it took him years to think of a name for this show.

He made a list of over 100 names, but in the end, he came back to the one he had thought of first – Pluribus. Now it seems, there couldn’t have been a better name!

Watch ‘Pluribus’ on Apple TV and find out what happens to the lone girl who sets out to fight against an entire world of happiness.
