Remember that funny SNL digital short? Andy Samberg played the character of “Shy Ronnie.”

He would simply mumble along while singing with Rihanna, but as soon as Rihanna left the room, Ronnie’s confidence would soar and he would break into a powerful rap.

This sketch was such a hit that nine-time Grammy winner Rihanna returned the following year for its sequel, “Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde.”

Andy Samberg Reveals the Secret

Recently, on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, Andy Samberg and his partner, Akiva Schaffer, shared a fun fact related to this sketch.

Andy Samberg interrupted and explained that the correct pronunciation of Rihanna’s name is “Rih-ann-uh,” meaning the emphasis is on the middle ‘ann’, not the ‘awn’.

When Rihanna Mispronounced Her Name

Most interestingly, Rihanna herself mispronounced her name in the sketch!

Akiva Schaffer revealed that Andy Samberg was responsible for this.

Andy mispronounced the name during rehearsals.

And look at Rihanna’s professionalism, she even copied Andy’s wrong inflection to perfect the prank and recorded it!

The “I Don’t Care” Coolness

When crew members asked Rihanna why she doesn’t correct people, the “Diamonds” singer coolly replied, “I don’t care. I know my name is Rihanna.”

But when Akiva asked her what her mother calls her, the truth came out: “Ree-ann-uh.”

Akiva felt a little embarrassed, but Rihanna’s humility and carefree attitude won everyone’s hearts!

Even today, she calls him “Shy Ronnie.”

Years have passed, but Rihanna and Andy Samberg remain friends.

Andy jokingly revealed that whenever he meets Rihanna at events like award shows, he’s not sure if she even remembers his real name.
