Fatherhood in Reel and Real Life

Wow! What a wonderful thing! Ryan Guzman is always in “dad mode” – whether on screen or off.

Interestingly, before becoming a father in real life, he only played fathers on TV!

9-1-1’s Adorable Father-Son Connection

Ryan, 38, plays firefighter and paramedic Edmundo “Eddie” Díaz on ABC’s hit series “9-1-1.

He began this role in season 2 in 2018. In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, father of two and

former MMA fighter Ryan expressed his gratitude to Gavin McHugh (who plays his son Christopher on the show). He said Gavin helped him “live life as a father” on the show.

Learnings from a Work Son

“It’s so great to work with him, and to call him my work son,” Ryan said.

He further explained, “In many ways, I’ve been able to live as a father with him before I even became a real father, and that’s taught me a lot.”

Truly, sometimes the characters we play prepare us for life, don’t they?

Watching Gavin grow from a child to a young adult

Ryan and Gavin, now 15, have been working together on ‘9-1-1’ for eight years. Their journey continues in Season 9, which premiered on October 9. Ryan described Gavin, saying, “He’s really a young man now.

His voice is deeper, which surprises me every time. He’s probably grown a foot. He has the heart of America, and there’s a reason for that—he’s truly a pure, unique person with a heart of gold.”

Wishing a Bright Future

Ryan continued, “That kid is incredible. Oh, sorry, that young man is incredible.

Gavin is someone I see a bright future for, and it’s been a pleasure and an honor to call him my work son for so long.” What a sweet thing to see one actor think so highly of another!

Halloween Preparations

Off-screen, Ryan is preparing for Halloween with his two children.

“Right now, my daughter is getting ready to be Mira from ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ – and my son too, he’ll be Jinu, I think,” he explained.

“They’re very excited. Yeah, it’s the best time of year for us.”

‘9-1-1’ airs every Thursday at 8 pm on ABC, and episodes are available to stream on Hulu the next day.
