Cubs legend dies at the age of 65
Today is a very sad day in the world of baseball.
Chicago Cubs legend and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg died on July 28, 2025 at the age of 65. He breathed his last while fighting cancer.
Battle with cancer
Last year in January 2024, Sandberg revealed that he was suffering from prostate cancer.
He became cancer-free in May, but the disease returned again in December.
He wrote on Instagram, “We will stay positive and strong, and fight to defeat this disease.”
A baseball fanatic since childhood
Born in Spokane, Washington in 1959, Sandberg was named after Yankees pitcher Ryne Duren.
During his school days, he excelled not only in baseball but also in basketball and football.
He chose baseball as his career without going to college.
Recognition in Cubs
Initially Philadelphia Phillies drafted him, but his career shone after he joined the Chicago Cubs in 1982.
His play at second base was so brilliant that he won the Gold Glove Award 9 times!
Story of “The Sandberg Game”
The 1984 season was memorable for him. He scored the most runs and triples in the National League with a batting average of .314.
He hit two home runs in the same match against St. Louis Cardinals, which is known as “The Sandberg Game”.

Rich in calm nature
Despite his strong performance on the field, Sandberg was a very calm and less talkative person.
His funny name in the team was “Gabby” (talkative) because he did not talk at all!
Honors and achievements
Sandberg was a 10-time All-Star, 7-time Silver Slugger.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Cubs retired his number. His statue will be unveiled in 2024.
Life after playing
After retiring from playing, Sandberg served as manager of the Cubs and then the Phillies.
As a Cubs ambassador in 2016, he saw the team win the World Series for the first time in 108 years, which was a dream come true for him.
Family and legacy
Sandberg married Margaret after divorcing his first wife, Cindy, in 1995. He is survived by his wife and five children.
“Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Cubs fans.
His dedication, integrity and passion will always be remembered,” Cubs president Tom Ricketts said.
The baseball star will live on in fans’ hearts forever.
