The Netflix series The Diplomat tells the story of Kate and Hal’s complicated relationship.

When War Becomes the Medium of Love
it’s been a blast watching Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell’s chemistry in the third season of Netflix’s hit series “The Diplomat“!
Their intense banter and love-hate relationship has reached a whole new level. Now, they’ll appear married in public, but remain separated in private—at least for most of this season.
A Strange Chemistry
In Keri Russell’s words, “This relationship is so much fun to play. The writing is so great. It’s fun to play this relationship because it has so many layers.”
It’s really strange that Kate and Hal can drive each other crazy, yet still be so good for each other! Despite their yelling, they’re the perfect people for each other.
The New Season’s Blast
“The season started off great,” Keri says. “What happens at the end of the first episode is amazing, and that’s where it all begins.”
This season, Kate and Hal face all sorts of challenges, especially when new President Grace Payne (Allison Janney) wants Hal to be her Vice President, not Kate—and that’s where a new marital crisis begins!
A Unique Bond of Connection
“It’s so interesting—no matter what form their relationship takes, they’re always connected,” Kerry says. “I don’t know, there are few people in life you have that kind of connection with, and they’re that kind of couple.”
A Mix of Love and Hate
Rufus Sewell explained last year, “They’re fantastic together and a headache together, and it’s all part of the same thing.” They know each other well.
They know what they like and dislike about each other, and sometimes the things they like are the things they dislike.
The Depth of Relationships
Series creator Deborah Kahn wanted to show through this couple’s story that “divorce, hatred, lust, and hating the way your partner breathes—all of this is a part of many long-term relationships.”
She said, “People whose relationships ultimately don’t work out aren’t because someone cheated on someone, but because they didn’t like the way the other person breathes.”
New Season, New Complications
In the third season, Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected.
Her friendship with Secretary of State Austin Dennison becomes even more complicated, and a strange bond forms with First Gentleman Todd Payne.
