‘The New Zoo Review’ children’s show born from a toy!

Doug Momary’s beanbag frog inspired show ‘The New Zoo Review’, an immortal story that teaches emotional intelligence

The New Zoo Review: Inspiration from a beanbag frog

Doug Momery’s mother worked in a small toy store in Whittier, California.

There was a beanbag frog named Freddy who planted the seed of a children’s show in Doug’s mind.

One day he picked up a pencil and sketched some funny characters.

Then he hummed a tune, wrote a theme song and pitched his idea without any pilot footage!

Turning the dream into reality

Doug and Emily Peden (who became Amy Jo in the show) got married and started filming the pilot as soon as they returned from their honeymoon.

Both came from the theater, so it was a challenge for them to avoid overacting in front of the camera.

They worked with veterans like Sid and Marty Krofft on costume design and performance.

Emotional intelligence

While ‘Sesame Street’ imparted academic knowledge to children, ‘The New Zoo Revue’ focused on moral and relationship topics.

Respect, empathy and everyday problems were part of the show.

Big companies like Mattel initially objected to episodes like “Greed,” but eventually gave the green light to moments that taught kids how important it is to be content with what they have.

Immortal legacy

The show, which aired from 1972 to 1977 and remained syndicated for nearly 20 years, created a deep emotional connection with viewers.

Even decades later, Doug and Emily connect with fans through social media.

They often meet the “New Zoo Kids” – who are now adults and making positive contributions to society.

Doug and Amy Jo’s New Dreams

Doug is now developing two new kids’ shows:

Knights of IT: Guardians of the Digital Realm (live action with animation and songs)

Safari Town (a fully animated adventure)

Emily runs an interactive newsletter where she invites submissions from fans to keep the spirit of ‘The New Zoo Revue’ alive.

Summary:

Inspired by a beanbag frog, Doug Momary and Emily Peden created ‘The New Zoo Revue’ which teaches emotional intelligence. This 70s show is still alive in people’s hearts.
