Truth About Charles Ingalls

TV’s Dad vs. the Real Charles Ingalls

If you’ve seen Little House on the Prairie, you’ll know Michael Landon‘s character, Charles Ingalls. On TV, he was a perfect father—always understanding and strong.

But did you know that the real Charles Ingalls’ life was quite different from the one on TV and in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books? The truth wasn’t as romantic as it was portrayed on screen.

It was hard to stay in one place.

On the TV show, we saw the Ingalls family living happily in Walnut Grove. But in reality, Charles couldn’t stay in one place. He moved several times with his wife, Caroline, and their children.

Their life was well established in the “Big Woods” of Wisconsin, but Charles’s adventurous nature led them away from there and into unknown and difficult areas.

According to author Caroline Fraser, Laura hid her father’s struggles in her books. The truth was that Charles repeatedly failed to provide a stable life for his family.

Beautiful home or mud cave?

On the show, the Ingalls family lived in a lovely wooden house. But would you believe the real family in Walnut Grove lived in a “dugout”?

This wasn’t a luxurious home, but a crude house dug into the ground on the side of a hill. This was the reality of poverty hidden behind the glamour of TV.

Last Days and Death

After years of wandering, Charles finally settled in De Smet, South Dakota, in 1879. There, he helped build a church and found some peace. He died of heart trouble on June 8, 1902, at the age of 66.

Although he wasn’t as perfect as Michael Landon portrayed him, his obituary described him as an upright citizen and a loving father. And perhaps that’s what matters most.
