Daisy Edgar-Jones Pays Stormy Price
Actresses often face serious physical challenges in pursuit of a scene-stealing performance, and Daisy Edgar-Jones is willing to speak up for those who endure the ordeal.
Edgar-Jones spoke to the Therapuss podcast about her experience on set for the disaster blockbuster, explaining that the wind machines used left her “a bit deaf” in her left ear. Not that the sight of her tiptoeing away from an oncoming tornado wasn’t worth it, Edgar-Jones said.
Edgar-Jones is set to leave the storm chasing behind her, instead donning corsets and taking on Jane Austen’s Elinor Dashwood for a contemporary Jane Austen adaptation from director Georgia Oakley.
So What Went Wrong?
The injury: Edgar-Jons claims to have been left slightly deaf in her left ear following the production
The cause: Wind machines blew against the actress’s left side repeatedly during the action set pieces
The location: The production was shot in Oklahoma, one of the US’s prime Tornado Alley states.
The irony: Production was frequently halted by actual tornadoes, requiring crews to wait days before filming could resume. Wind machines were used to the maximum extent possible once skies cleared.
The bright side: Edgar-Jones told The Hollywood Reporter she got the “bug” for action films. Edgar-Jones’ stuntwork primarily involved “winds and water and rubble” but was done under the guidance of a professional stunt team.
What’s next?: Edgar-Jones is set to star in a contemporary Jane Austen film – Sense and Sensibility – directed by Georgia Oakley.

A Star on the Rise
Edgar-Jones’ turn in the disaster film represented both a box office test for the actress and an expansion of her range. Her openness about the challenges of making the film, rather than a disassociation from its glittering surface, has made her all the more appealing to audiences.
Instead of telling fans what they want to hear about the luxury of a blockbuster movie shoot, she laid bare the tediousness of a wind machine hitting one side of one’s head for weeks.
Edgar-Jones’ enthusiasm for action movies, meanwhile, should provide her with a new avenue for fame – and fortune. If she can balance the excitement of taking on a new challenge with the critical acclaim regulars expect from her, Edgar-Jones will have secured a sustainable career.
From Tornadoes to Tea Parties
Elinor Dashwood, the heroine of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, is a far cry from the heroine of a disaster movie – but that’s precisely the point. Edgar-Jones appears to be selecting stories that challenge her in new ways with each project.
Oakley’s “contemporary” take on Austen’s novel is likewise a refreshing change from the typical costume dramas that litter the landscape of film adaptations of classic literature.
