Godzilla Minus Zero Sets World Premiere at NYFF

A Franchise Reborn

Few sequels are granted such gravitas, but Godzilla Minus One scored Takashi Yamazaki an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, becoming both a critical and commercial hit in 2023.

The director has returned to the towering kaiju, which has long been a fixture of Japanese cinema, and now the world eagerly awaits the film’s debut. Here is what we know about it so far.

Big City Premiere

According to the Film at Lincoln Center, Godzilla Minus Zero will be unveiled to the public on September 26 as the Spotlight Gala film at the 64th New York Film Festival.

The screening will be held at Alice Tully Hall, with Yamazaki himself set to attend the event. This way, the film will be available for viewing in New York more than a month before its general release, reports Deadline.

What The Story Tells

The film’s plot takes place in 1949, two years after the events of the first movie. Japan is gradually recovering from the destruction of the Second World War when another Godzilla appears on the horizon, threatening to interrupt the country’s rebuilding efforts.

The story revolves once again around the Shikishima family, whose fate was closely tied to the giant monster in the original film. Notably, the sequel is set to star Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe in the leading roles.

Yamazaki’s Statement

Yamazaki was also delighted to return to New York, calling it an honor to present the film to the public in the city where the first Godzilla picture was seen many decades earlier.

“I want the world to experience the terror of Japan’s Godzilla and understand what lies beneath that fear,” said the director. Before his work on Godzilla Minus One, Yamazaki gained fame among movie fans for his contribution to Japan’s visual effects (VFX) industry.

He worked his way up from the bottom and eventually became one of the country’s best directors.

Festival Director’s Statement

The film’s artistic director, Dennis Lim, believes that Yamazaki has managed to breathe new life into a beloved franchise, which has been entertaining moviegoers for decades.

“More than 70 years after its debut, Godzilla is still frightening audiences. Yamazaki reignited the series’ primal power by returning to its post-war roots,” stated Lim.

He also added that the sequel was a throwback to the era when special effects were minimal, but the monster’s menace was tangible. In addition, the director expressed his delight that the NYFF could help generate excitement about the film’s upcoming release.

A Long-Awaited Sequel

Outside the festival circuit, Godzilla Minus Zero is set to hit North American movie theaters on November 6. This date is barely a few days away from the film’s debut in Japan, which is scheduled for November 3.

This way, the film will have a short theatrical window after its festival run, but its distributors are confident that the picture will benefit from the NYFF’s much-needed publicity.

A Franchise on the Rise

Godzilla Minus One is set to become one of the highest-grossing foreign-language films of all time in the U.S., having already grossed $8.5 million as of early September.

In addition, the film continues to captivate moviegoers, with its re-released black-and-white version screening nationwide. Notably, Godzilla Minus Zero has become one of the most anticipated films of the year, regardless of the festival hype.
