Owen Thiele lands a role in Netflix’s 13 Going on 30 reboot.

Owen Thiele Adults FX season 2

A Whirlwind Rise

Owen Thiele has had a meteoric rise in the comedy scene over the last few years. From playing scene-stealing support in a pair of buzzy comedy series, to a late-night podcasting sensation, to his busy work on many prominent upcoming projects, Thiele has seen his share of opportunities.

At Teen Vogue Fest in Brooklyn, the actor spoke about staying humble in a busy year, as well as a certain family member who helps keep him in check.

Staying Humble: Somehow, Thiele’s had a busy year on the small screen, with two series, a podcast, multiple late-night talk show appearances, and some prominent projects on the horizon.

While it has been a hectic year for the rising star, it hasn’t been easy staying humble in the face of massive success, and it seems that Thiele has had to rely on one particular family member to help him with that.

The Mom Strategy

It seems that Thiele isn’t one to shrink away from the trappings of fame. In fact, as he explained to Teen Vogue, it was precisely his goal to lean into the ridiculousness of a rising career at first.

So where did he turn to ground himself to keep his ego in check? According to Thiele, it was his mother Amy Kanter and her particular brand of unkindness.

Keeping It In Check

Kanter, it seems, has a unique approach to keeping her son in check. Whenever he starts to get too big for his britches and feels like a real star, she sends him brutally honest snaps of herself and Thiele lounging around the house, giving him a much-needed reality check.

Family Matters

It seems that the lighthearted nature of their mother-son dynamic is what has helped inspire much of his comedy, as he grew up as an adopted son (by choice) of Bob Thiele Jr. and Amy Kanter.

The actor has talked often about the unique family bond and how it has inspired many of his comedic creations, including the online series that have gotten him to where he is today.

Screen And Podcast Success

Currently, Thiele is enjoying his success on the small screen, playing dual roles in two different series. In the ensemble comedy Adults, he plays Anton, one of the main supporting characters in the series.

Now that the series has been renewed for a second season (which premieres on August 27), it seems that Thiele has found a nice recurring role.

On the other hand, the actor also serves as George, Benito Skinner’s mentor, in Overcompensating. On the podcast front, the actor has been appearing on In Your Dreams – a late-night podcast hosted by Alex Cooper’s Unwell Network.

This series has seen Thiele welcoming an array of social media sensations like Emma Chamberlain, alongside Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner.

Off Color In Development

Other than his appearance on the podcast, Thiele is currently working on his own half-autobiographical project, Off Color.

Inspired by his real-life adoption into a white Jewish family, this comedy has seen him team up with none other than Ilana Glazer, who serves as an executive producer (and appears in the series) as well, as well as Curb Your Enthusiasm staple Susie Essman, who plays a role similar to his real-life mother.

With that said, it seems that Thiele may have found the perfect comedic role for him.

A 13 Going On 30 Trick

Meanwhile, it is reported that Thiele has joined the star-studded reboot of 13 Going On 30, which is set to begin filming later this year, with the movie due to hit Netflix in 2022.

With Brett Haley ( A Star Is Born ) directing the film, and a cast that includes Jessica Alba, Logan Lerman and Taylor Zakhar Perez, the film has been generating a ton of excitement as the reboot of the 2004 film that starred Jennifer Garner.

Thiele will join fellow co-stars Emily Bader and Nasim Pedrad in the on-screen reboot of this popular teen comedy.

The Road Ahead

With two series, a podcast, a film reboot, and several other projects on the horizon, Owen Thiele is sure to have one busy year ahead. The actor has already come a long way from his early days on the scene.

Luckily for him, he has a mother who knows just how to keep his feet on the ground when the time comes.
